Role Summary 

The Senior Medical Director provides strategic and hands-on medical leadership across AstraZeneca's US inhaled respiratory portfolio. The role leads healthcare strategy, data creation, scientific dissemination, and external engagement. As a member of the Core Medical Team, this individual serves as the Voice of Medical, influences across US, Global, and R&D partners, and directly owns selected tactical results.

Key Responsibilities 

• Lead development and execution of US medical strategy and annual medical plans across the inhaled respiratory portfolio. 

• Serve as the Voice of Medical in Core Medical Teams and cross-functional forums, providing clear scientific leadership and influencing portfolio, brand, launch, and investment decisions. 

• Establish US evidence priorities and coordinate integrated plans spanning clinical analyses, observational data studies, applied research, health outcomes research, externally sponsored research, and publications.  

• Lead scientific narrative development and ensure evidence is translated into accurate, balanced, and clinically meaningful communications for internal and external audiences. 

• Provide strategic oversight of publication and congress plans, scientific platforms, advisory boards, medical education, and Field Medical priorities. 

• Build trusted relationships with external experts, professional societies, health systems, and strategic partners; use insights to shape medical strategy and improve translation of evidence into practice. 

• Partner with Field Medical Affairs to set, drive and measure key performance indicators, summarize insights and ensure tactics and materials are aligned to strategy. 

• Lead or supervise implementation science, quality-improvement, and healthcare-system initiatives that address barriers to guideline-directed respiratory care. 

• Partner closely with Commercial, Market Access, HEOR, Regulatory, Clinical Development, Global Medical, Patient Safety, Medical Information, and Medical Excellence. 

• Serve as a medical reviewer and approver for promotional and non-promotional materials; directly support MLR review, scientific claims, training, congress, and field materials as business needs require. 

• Mentor Medical Directors and matrix team members; build alignment, accountability, and high-quality execution across complex initiatives. 

• Ensure all activities meet AstraZeneca policies, regulatory requirements, ethical standards, and expectations for scientific integrity. 

Essential Qualifications 

• MD, DO, PharmD, PhD,

• At least 5 years of combined relevant clinical, scientific, healthcare, and pharmaceutical industry experience, including Medical Affairs experience. 

• Demonstrated success leading US medical strategy, evidence generation, scientific communications, and external scientific engagement in a complex matrix organization. 

• Demonstrated excellent scientific judgment, business acumen, communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills. 

• Ability to move effectively between strategic leadership and hands-on execution. 

• Proven track record to collaborate and build internal/external networks, lead field medical strategies and training, and translate complex science into compelling, accessible, and compliant messages for diverse audiences 

• Strong understanding of the US healthcare, regulatory, compliance, payer, and provider environment, including experience with MLR or comparable medical review processes. 

Preferred Qualifications 

• Expertise in respiratory medicine, asthma, COPD, pulmonary pharmacology, or a related therapeutic area. 

• Experience with real-world evidence, implementation science, healthcare-system partnerships, publication strategy, congress planning, or Field Medical leadership. 

• Experience leading across multiple brands, markets, indications or lifecycle stages. 

The annual base pay for this position ranges from $243,586.40 - $365,379.60 USD Annual and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, our positions offer a short-term incentive bonus opportunity; eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program.
